How long have you worked with The Flat Company?
I’ve been with the company since it all began back in 2000, when Bill and I decided to join forces and set up.
How did you end up working in the property industry?
I started out as a painter and decorator, and while working for the owner of an old letting agent in Edinburgh called Central Letting, he happened to be on the lookout for a new business manager. I thought, "Why not?"—and here I am.
What's the most inspiring part of your job?
I love helping people. It’s often a thankless task, but there’s nothing quite like the satisfaction of solving a problem when a client or tenant has been struggling with a tricky situation. And that goes for our office team too.
The best piece of advice you've ever been given?
Never go to bed on an argument.
What advice would you give a candidate who wants to join The Flat Company team?
Always stick to the procedures and don’t be afraid to ask questions—no matter how daft they might seem. We’re all here to learn together.
Top Edinburgh recommendation
I don’t live in Edinburgh anymore, but if you’re ever in the area, I highly recommend staying at Monachyle Mhor. The rooms are all unique and fabulous, and the food is heavenly—most of it comes straight from the hotel’s own farm and it’s a real treat.
