Chris McBain

Head of Maintenance

Chris

How long have you worked with The Flat Company?

I’ll be celebrating 6 years with The Flat Company this December, time has flown in.

How did you end up working in the property industry?

I’ve been in the construction game since 2002, starting out as a qualified joiner. I’ve dabbled in all sorts of management roles, from production factories to health and safety. B I even ran my own joinery business focusing on maintenance and refurbishments for rental properties, both residential and commercial. When I relocated, I decided to trade in my tool belt for a managerial role and joined The Flat Company as the head of Maintenance.

What's the most inspiring part of your job?

I love overseeing projects. While I don’t get my hands dirty as much anymore, I really enjoy the organising, managing, and then showing off the finished product to clients. Plus, I really enjoy reviewing systems and thinking of new ways to help the whole team work smarter.

The best piece of advice you've ever been given is?

Always be open and honest. Don’t dodge a problem; if you’re unsure about something, just ask or do a bit of research. If you make a mistake, own up to it and fix it.

What advice would you give a candidate who wants to join The Flat Company team?

Dive into the opportunities, roll up your sleeves, learn loads, and enjoy the journey.

Top Edinburgh recommendation (be it a restaurant, venue, experience etc.)

If you get the chance, make sure to go to the Edinburgh Festival. Spend a day soaking in the vibrant atmosphere, flitting from show to show and pub to pub. It’s a great way to spend a day.
